Bradford, Vt. June 2014, 2009
Bear Ridge Speedway provided some pre Fourth of July fireworks for the fans with three rollovers being recorded in the record books this past Saturday night for the 99ROCK weekly racing series sponsored by Bradford Mini Mart and Jiffy Mart.
Before the scheduled night of events began, the makeup races from Bond Auto Parts Night were run for the Journal Opinion Fast Fours and Ridge Runner Hornets.
The KDD NAPA Ridge Runner Hornets out of the box would set the stage for the level of competition and excitement for the fans. Kyle Ashford #51 W Topsham VT dominated the field claiming his first win with Tom Placey #22 Bradford VT second and Karl Sheldon #19 St Johnsbury coming home in third.
The Journal Opinion Fast Fours were up next for their makeup race and when the checkers waved Ryan Dutton #21 Bradford VT would bring home the checkers with Andy Johnson #12 Wilder VT and Steve Bell #10 St Johnsbury VT who leading early, would overdrive coming out of turn two, and have to work his way back to finish in the third victory lane spot.
The regular events sponsored by Bradford Mini Mart ~ Jiffy Mart would kick into gear with the first round of madness for the KDD NAPA Ridge Runner Hornets. The drivers would pull in forty five laps giving them three fifteen laps of competition. Their first segment would come to halt when Charlie Lakin #3 Groton VT went for a wild ride in turn two, stopping on all four wheels after flipping his machine FIVE times. Lakin would be A-Okay, and being the trooper he is, Lakin jumped into another competitor’s car for the remaining two segments of competition. The top three across the line were: Tom Placey #22 Bradford VT, Bobby Bell #24 St Johnsbury VT, Kyle Ashford #51 W Topsham VT.
The second segment turned out to be less eventful for Charlie Lakin, but just as exciting for the fans, with the field inverted from the first segment setting the battle for competition. At the end of this segment your top three across the line were Tom Placey #22 Bradford VT, Bobby Bell #24 St Johnsbury VT, Charlie Lakin #3 Groton VT.
The third and final segment for the night would see the field inverted again from the prior finish for your starting field, meaning Tom Placey going in the leader overall of the first two would have to work his way to the front. Along with Placey Bobby Bell #24 St Johnsbury VT found himself in the same position, and it was clear the two were prepared to do battle to claim the overall checkers for the night. Placey would not get the luck needed, as Bell would work his way thru traffic to claim the segment win. Following Bell across the line was Charlie Lakin #3 Groton VT and Kyle Ashford #51 W Topsham VT.
Overall top three for the KDD NAPA of Bradford Hornet Madness night were Bobby Bell #24 St Johnsbury VT, Tom Placey #22 Bradford VT, Carl Sweet #85 East Corinth VT.
For the Journal Opinion Fast Fours Steve Bell would once again bring the field to the green and once again looked poised to claiming his first win of the season. Handling would see his car fall back with Nathan Potter #4 Sharon VT coming from the back strong. Potter dominated the race coming home with the checkers with Kevin Harran #57 St Johnsbury VT claiming his four second place finish of the season. Third would go to Ryan Dutton #21 Bradford VT when Andy Johnson missed the mark coming out of turn four for the checkers
The A Notch Above Limited Late Models saw double digits for their car count and for that were awarded the opportunity for a Blackmount Equipment semi feature event. Danny Eastman #8 Thetford Center VT, the dominate car so far this season, found himself after the semi event poised for his first triple crown in his career. Eastman not bowing under the pressure worked his way to the front and when the checkers waved found himself in the middle victory lane checkered flag spot, earning his first triple crown of his career. Coming home in second was Jeremy Hodge #14 with #61 Will Hull East Montpelier VT in third.
In the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes #71 Josh Harrington Topsham VT said no more mr nice guy, making sure that when #16 Billy Simmons Bradford VT came knocking he wasn’t letting him in. Harrington held off the hard fought charges of Simmons to claim the win with Bother Richie Simmons Bradford VT in the #1 machine coming home in third in his first appearance in the Coupes.
For the BOND Auto Parts Sportsman Modifieds it was a wild and crazy night. Three role overs were seen this night and with this the last division up for competition meant two would fly here. The first red would be when hard racing in turns one and two found Mike Capra going for a wild ride landing on all fours when done. The long walk to the pit area meant Capra’s night was over. When racing resumed Wayne Stearns #1 Thetford Ctr VT was the man to beat, surviving several cautions with Chris Donnelly #17 Orford NH nipping at his heals. One more red flag would fly before the night was over when Travis Shinn took a wild ride ending up on his side and out for the night. When racing resumed Stearns would prove to be unstoppable crossing the line first, with Donnelly coming home in second. Completing the top three was a familiar face, Gene Pierson #44 E Corinth VT in his first appearance at the Ridge as driver for 2009.
The final makeup event for the Bond Auto Parts sponsored night was the for the P&C Hornet queens. When the checkers waved Brenda Atherton #77 Fairlee VT claimed another victory over the field.
