Bradford, Vt. August 16, 2009
New faces grace the checkered flag strip Saturday night at Bear Ridge Speedway during the 99ROCK weekly racing series events sponsored by Swenson Insurance Agency of Bradford VT.
In the KDD NAPA Ridge Runner Hornets Mike Ryan led every lap but the ones that matter, in what looked to be his best run of the season. Ryan seemed unstoppable, until his machine stopped. From the infield it sounded like that engine has seen its last lap, and Ryan with just two to go would go from first to fourth in the blink of an eye. Ryan’s misfortune was the fortune of one of the new faces in victory lane, as Mike Chapin #37 Chelsea VT having worked his way from eighth to second, saw that spot turn to first and has first win of his career. Following Chapin to victory lane was your current points leader, and seeming unstoppable at being crowned the champ in this division, Tom Placey #22 Bradford VT. The third and final victory lane spot would be occupied by Bobby Bell #24 St Johnsbury VT.
The Journal Opinion Fast Fours was the other division to see another first time face to the winners spot this year as Steve Bell #10 St Johnsbury VT was finally able to capitalize on his starting spot, perfect track conditions for him, and a green to checkers event. Bell would be accompanied by Andy Johnson #12 Wilder VT and Ryan Dutton #21 Bradford VT who finished in that order.
The A Notch Above Limited Late Models competitors have their work set out for them if they hope to knock Danny Eastman #8 Thetford Ctr VT from the top of this heap. Rest assured “it ain’t over till it’s over” but if Eastman continues at the pace he is at, he will surely be crowned the champ in this the first year back at the Ridge for the division. Eastman would once again come from the back, move to the outside, and work his way to the front, in what looked as easy as a Sunday afternoon drive. Unable to stop him from making his way by, Jeremy Hodge #17 Bradford VT and Shane Race #22 Strafford VT, would have to settle for the other two victory lane spots in that order.
The Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupes with some new faces in the field would be one of the three divisions to go green to checkers, which meant that if you were going to get it done, you needed to get it done early. Josh Harrington #71 Topsham VT came from deep in the field and picked up the tails of his car driven by Jason Horniak #3 Bradford VT. Harrington would work Horniak hard for a great battle for the lead, but when the checkers waved, Horniak crossed first with Harrington in second, following the dynamic duo in third was Billy Simmons #16 Bradford VT.
The BOND Auto Parts Sportsman Modifieds managed to cut their cautions in half from the week before, putting on yet another whale of a show for the fans. Mike Dunn after winning his first ever heat race in the Sportsman Mods, brought the field to the green and held off the seasoned veterans for several laps, before being over taken by the some of the best of the best. One such driver was Chris Donnelly #17 Orford NH, having seen Eastman in the Limited Late Models making it work on the top, decided he would try it at well. Donnelly like Eastman was able to make it work, and would get by Wayne Stearns #1d Thetford Ctr VT, and Gary Siemons #5 Orford NH on the outside to take the lead and sail on for the win. Stearns and Siemons followed him across the line in that order.
